Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Policy
Students must be in good academic standing at Hands-on Medical Massage School (HoMMS) in order to receive Federal Financial Aid. The U.S. Department of Education requires each college to have a policy that ensures all students receiving financial aid maintain satisfactory progress toward completing their program of study. At HoMMS each student’s academic record will be reviewed at the end of each semester. In order to maintain satisfactory progress for financial aid purposes, you must satisfy all of the following elements of the policy.
Academic progress is evaluated using both qualitative (GPA) and quantitative (the percentage of units satisfactorily completed) requirements:
Grade Point Average (GPA) -- Students must maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average on a 4 point scale for each semester attended.
Percentage of attempted cumulative credits completed - Students must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 67% of the credits attempted at HoMMS. This standard requires students to successfully complete (with letter grade of C or better) a minimum of 67% of the total number of credits attempted. Letter grades of C-, D, F, W, I , will not be considered as credits successfully completed or earned.
Maximum number of attempted units allowed to complete your program- Students must complete all degree or certificate requirements within 150% of the number of units required to complete your program. Federal regulations require that the school set a maximum time frame in which students are expected to finish their program of study. Under this standard, you must complete your degree or certificate within 150% of the published program length, including transfer credits.
Prior Attendance
The financial aid office is required to consider all attendance at HoMMS when determining the quantitative component of SAP, even if financial aid was not received during any of the previous periods of enrollment. This includes credits attempted from all institutions in which the student had prior enrollment.
Financial Aid Probation
If during any semester you do not achieve a satisfactory GPA or satisfactory completion 67% of units attempted you will be placed on financial aid probation for the next semester of attendance. You may continue to receive financial aid while on probation. If after the probationary semester you are not back in good standing, you may be given a subsequent probationary semester. If after two consecutive semesters you fail either the qualitative or 67% quantitative component of the SAP policy you may be disqualified for future Title IV until such a time as you have proven your academic ability by raising your GPA to 2.0 or satisfactorily completing (2.0 GPA) while not receiving Title IV financial aid.
Mitigating Circumstances - Hands-on Medical Massage School recognizes mitigating circumstances and the affects it may have on a student’s academic progress. In cases where a student has an unusual situation outside the student’s control that has affected the student’s academic progress, allowances may be made.
Appeal Process
A student may appeal the decision of financial aid suspension. Appeals must be made to the director of financial aid in writing with supporting documentation attached, including letters from physicians, when appropriate. Once your written appeal and supporting documents are reviewed, a decision is made on a case-by-case basis by the financial aid director. If an appeal for financial aid suspension (for not meeting the completion rate percentage or the cumulative GPA) is granted, you will be given another probationary semester.
Reinstatement - A student suspended from financial aid may request a reinstatement of financial aid after successfully completing a minimum of nine (9) credits, at their own expense.
Refund Policy
Students receiving Federal Aid title IV funds that withdraw or drop without notice from all classes prior to completing 60% point of the semester, will be subject to Federal refund policies. Part or all of the funds they have received will be refunded to the Federal Program. For continuing students the larger of the Federal refund or the institutional refund will be paid back and for first time students the federal Pro-rata refund will apply. Examples of Refunds are available from the Financial Aid Office. The college will automatically calculate refunds and return these funds to the appropriate program and bill the student for the remaining amount throughout the term. Holds will be placed on the student’s records until the funds are repaid by the student. Please see School Catalog for further details.
